Considering Somnoplasty to Solve Snoring Problem?

If you think you’ve exhausted every avenue of potential snoring solutions besides surgery, you may find yourself wondering if it’s really worth it to go through with all the time, money, and most likely pain.

But there are new types of surgery to help cure snoring, one of the most popular of which – and safe and easy – is somnoplasty.

The benefits of somnoplasty will be discussed below, but first let us review the other types of snoring treatments out there – all of which you may want to try before thinking about surgery.

Changing Sleeping Positions

Snoring may be exacerbated or even caused by sleeping on one’s back, which leaves the windpipe under pressure of the overlying musculature. Sleeping on one’s side may solve this problem.

Exercise

Simple muscular exercise can often prevent or treat a developing or chronic snoring problem.
By strengthening jaw, tongue, and throat muscles, you can sometimes prevent your respiratory muscles from constricting and obstructing the flow of air into the lungs, which causes snoring.

Also, obese people have been shown to be at an increased risk for snoring, so doing exercise to lose a few pounds may also help.

Helpful Products

There are many products out there, including special sleeping pillows, nasal strips and clips, and chin straps which all aim in some way or another to alleviate pressure or free up blockages in the airways.

Surgery and Somnoplasty

Sometimes, though, a snoring problem may be down to an anatomical issue that is difficult to reverse without surgery. Often the problem lies in obstruction due to the uvula, a tissue which hangs down at the back of the throat.

Certain laser surgeries can shrink parts of the uvula, thus removing the problem.
Somnoplasty takes a less radical approach, employing radio frequency waves to burn very small areas of the uvula or other problematic tissues, which will then be healed by the body. The targeted tissues, however, will not return.

Somnoplasty takes place in an out-patient setting, and usually in under 45 minutes. Patients have reported it to be surprisingly painless. So if nothing else works, and surgery seems to be the right option, somnoplasty may be your answer.

Exploring the Reasons for Snoring

There are many different reasons for snoring. They are often interrelated, though all of the causes will ultimately contribute to the constriction of the airways during sleep that produces a vibratory, snoring sound as air tries to flow through.

Some reasons for snoring can be guarded against, while others are primarily hereditary and may be treated, as opposed to fully prevented.

Here, snoring has been broken into two types of manifestation: snoring from the mouth and nasal snoring. This will help to distinguish between the different causes and reasons for snoring.

Snoring From the Mouth

A person who snores from the mouth is easily identifiable, as s/he will sleep and breathe with the mouth open.

The reason for this most often is that the snoring person has, over time, developed weak jaw, neck, and surrounding muscles, causing the mouth to fall slack when in a sleeping state.

The specific reasons for snoring due to the mouth being open are these:

1) the slackness of the jaw and gaping mouth put pressure on the underlying throat and respiratory muscles
2) this pressure constricts parts of the airway, making air struggle to get through
3) the pressure of air against surrounding tissues makes the tissue vibrate, thus causing the snoring sound

The good news is that open-mouth snoring is often treatable: wearing a simple chin strap to keep the mouth from falling open during sleep will train the body to breathe through the nose.

Nasal Snoring

Obviously then, nasal snoring occurs from some constriction of the airways without the mouth being open.

The reasons for snoring from the nose may lie high up in the nostrils or nose itself, where congestion can obstruct the flow of air. Narrow passageways may also do this.

Nasal snoring is more difficult to reverse, as it is usually more the fault of anatomy than of weakened muscles that may be trained to strengthen.

Experimenting with nasal strips or clips can help to prevent snoring on a night-to-night basis, but the condition often cannot fully be cured without surgical intervention.

Seeing the difference between nasal and mouth snoring is important in coming to understanding the reasons for snoring in certain cases, and from there discovering a solution.

Nasal Snoring More Difficult To Correct Than Other Types

To the outside observer, a snore is a snore, and it sounds more or less the same – annoying – regardless of who it’s coming from, or why.

But snoring happens for lots of different reasons, and some types of snoring are harder to treat than others. While “snoring from the mouth” is very common and thankfully often reversible, nasal snoring is often more problematic and difficult to treat.

Mouth versus Nasal Snoring

Snoring happens when the airways of the upper respiratory system become constricted, for one reason or another.

People who snore from the mouth also breathe primarily from the mouth during sleep. This is often due to “lazy jaw”, or a lower jaw that hangs open during sleep – especially when lying on the back – because other surrounding muscles are similarly weak.

When the mouth hangs open, it affects the throat and windpipe by putting pressure on these areas, thus constricting the flow of air to the lungs – and thus, snoring happens.

This worsens and becomes habit over time, as the muscles normally used to keep the mouth shut during sleep become even weaker with disuse.

Nasal snoring, on the other hand, is a trickier situation. Because it is healthier and more natural for the body to sleep through the nose as opposed to mouth, and especially during sleep, it is not a case of improper breathing or bad habits.

If a person tends to breathe through the nose during sleep, is neither overweight nor suffers from allergy or infection (all of which can influence snoring), chances are, s/he has some anatomical issue within the nose – potentially a deviated septum or a narrow nasal passageway.

Treatments for Mouth and Nasal Snoring

One of the best ways to reverse a mouth-breathing habit is to wear a chin strap for snoring during sleep – it prevents the mouth from falling open, thus preventing snoring. It also trains the body to breathe through the nose naturally.

Nasal snoring that does not respond to muscle-strengthening exercises or weight loss, or even experimentation with sleeping positions, may necessitate corrective surgery if the habit becomes annoying enough for the snorer and/or loved one to seek treatment.

Man Snoring: Too Common for Comfort

If you are the wife or female partner of an habitual male snorer, it may comes as no surprise to you that “man snoring” is both more common and severe when it occurs, as compared to instances of snoring in women.

Studies show that about half or more of all men are/will be snorers, while only a third of women suffer (or make their partners suffer) from this noisy nighttime habit.

But why the disparity?

What Snoring Is

Snoring happens when a person’s upper respiratory system and nasal passages are constricted. Air struggles to push through the airways, causing the surrounding tissues and muscles to vibrate, thus making noise.

Because this happens more frequently in men than women, it stands to reason then that men’s airways are generally more likely to become constricted than women’s.

Factors That Contribute to the Development of Snoring

The older a person gets, the likelier it is that s/he will develop chronic snoring – probably because with age muscle tone declines, and the tissues and muscles surrounding the throat and windpipe become more slack.

Obese men and women are far likelier to snore than people of a normal body mass index. This is likely due to the fact that excess flesh around the throat region will create excess pressure during the night (especially when people sleep on their backs), thus constricting air passageways.

Other factors that contribute to snoring include enlarged tonsils and adenoids, allergies, infection, and unusually small palates and nasal passages.

Why Man Snoring is More Common?

It appears that the different hormones that men and women release as they age and expand will contribute to their putting on weight in different areas of the body, thus affecting their predispositions to snore.

The male hormone androgen stimulates men to have a greater appetite than women, and this may contribute to their tendency to put on weight in the abdomen, neck, and shoulders – areas closely connected to the respiratory system.

Women, on the other hand, tend to gain weight in their hips and thighs – an excess of weight less likely to contribute to windpipe compression.

In addition, it may be less likely or men to seek medical treatment such conditions as allergies, infection, and other discomforts, thus prolonging unnecessarily prolonged “man snoring” – so if you hear your man snoring, see that he does something about it.

Wear a Chin Strap For Snoring Treatment and Prevention

Chronic snoring may be caused by many different things, including obesity, a shrinking windpipe, and enlarged adenoids or tonsils, but it is commonly caused by a simple, learned behavior: breathing through the mouth.

One solution to prevent, and in fact reverse, a tendency to breathe through the mouth may be to wear a chin strap for snoring.

What Is a Chin Strap For Snoring?

Chin straps fit around the head and under the lower jaw, effectively keeping the lower jaw from dropping during sleep.

The tendency for the jaw to drop, especially in certain sleeping positions (and particularly sleeping on one’s back) may be the result of a weak or lazy jaw.
Regardless of why a person begins to sleep with an open mouth, their jaw will get weaker and lazier as this behavior persists and becomes habit.

A chin strap for snoring will, however, prevent this from happening. It will teach the body to breathe through the nose when sleeping.

How Does a Chin Strap For Snoring Stop Snoring?

Keeping the mouth shut during respiration prevents the throat muscles from pressing down on the windpipe and constricting the flow of air.

When air struggles to get through the windpipe, it causes vibrations in the surrounding tissue, thus making a snoring sound.

A chin strap for snoring effectively relieves this pressure, letting air smoothly – and noiselessly – flow into the lungs.

How Does a Chin Strap For Snoring Cure Snoring?

Wearing a chin strap night after night forces the body and respiratory system to get used to breathing through the nose.

After a time, this nasal breathing may itself become habit, and it will feel more natural to keep the mouth closed, even after the chin strap is no longer worn.

This may not be the case for people whose jaw or throat muscles are predisposed to be weak or slack, but for many whose mouth breathing has become habit, a chin strap for snoring can actually solve the problem of snoring completely.
